PORT ST. LUCIE, FLA. – PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla., will once again host the Opening Ceremonies celebration for the 4th Annual Patriot Golf Day Weekend at the PGA Golf Club on Sat., Sept. 4, at 8 a.m. Patriot Golf Day events, held at golf courses nationwide from Sept. 3-6 (Fri.-Mon.) raise funds for the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides post-secondary educational scholarships for children and spouses of military servicemen and women killed or disabled while serving our country. Since 2007, more than $5.3 million has been raised and over 1,160 scholarships provided due to this generous support.

“It is an honor to once again host the Patriot Golf Day celebration at PGA Golf Club this Labor Day Weekend,” said Bob Baldassari, PGA Village general manager, which includes the PGA Golf Club, PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance and the PGA Historical Center, and is ranked among the “75 Best Golf Resorts” by Golf Digest. “Patriot Golf Day will be a very special event, as we once again raise funds for the families of those who have given everything. Minor League Baseball’s St. Lucie Mets will also unveil specially commissioned Patriot Golf Day jerseys on Fri., Sept. 3, that the players will wear, autograph and donate for auction, in order to raise funds and awareness for the Folds of Honor Foundation.

Patriot Golf Day Weekend at PGA Village Schedule of Events:
• “Patriot Golf Day Night” with the St. Lucie Mets – Fri., Sept. 3 7 p.m. Players for the St. Lucie Mets Minor League Baseball Team will wear specially designed red, white and blue Patriot Golf Day uniforms and hats that they will sign and auction to fans in attendance as a Folds of Honor Foundation fund-raiser. Maj. Ed Pulido (Ret.) and Ginger Gilbert Ravella will throw out the first pitch and the Avenue D Boys Choir will sing the National Anthem and will be accompanied by Florida Arts and Dance performers. Auction tables will be on the concourse behind home plate for games on Sept. 3-4. Winners will be brought on the field after Saturday’s game to claim their prize.
• Official Opening Ceremonies: PGA Golf Club — Sat., Sept. 4 8 a.m.-10 a.m. The Opening Ceremonies will feature: PGA of America Chief Executive Officer Joe Steranka; Maj. Ed Pulido (Ret.), senior vice president of development, the Folds of Honor Foundation, who lost his leg while in battle in Iraq; Ginger Gilbert Ravella, whose family was the first recipient of a Folds of Honor Foundation scholarship; state and local elected officials; and numerous honored veterans of military operations. There will be a call to the colors; “21 Golf Ball Salute;” U.S. Coast Guard Amphibious Vehicle; performances scheduled by the Avenue D Boys Choir, Florida Arts and Dance Company, marching bands and Pipe-Maj. Graeme Massie on bagpipe; appearances by St. Lucie Mets mascot “Slider”; Marine Corps run; and plenty of pageantry with 250 parade participants. On display will be the Ryder Cup Trophy, which is housed at the on-campus PGA Historical Center. Following the ceremonies will be a golf trick shot show by 2008 PGA Distinguished Service Award winner Dennis Walters, Florida National Guard Interactive Kids Zone and a Junior Golf Carnival with games, contests and more. • John Shimkonis Memorial Medal Tournament: PGA Golf Club – Sat., Sept 4 10:30 a.m.-close This 18-hole, shotgun event, named in honor of the first PGA Professional to give his life while fighting for his country during WWII, will use the 4-person scramble format. Proceeds from the entry fee of $75 benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation and cover: Golf, golf car, continental breakfast, boxed lunch and prizes for top finishers!
• Free 10-Minute Golf Lessons: PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance – Sat, Sept. 4 9 a.m.-1 p.m. For a donation of any amount to the Folds of Honor Foundation, golfers will receive a free lesson from a top PGA Professional at the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance. Donations will also be accepted throughout the weekend for prizes and raffle drawings. In addition, Patriot Golf Day apparel purchased in the Pro Shop from now until Labor Day – or anyone who wears Patriot Golf Day apparel – will receive a 50 percent discount on admission. Limited-edition “Patriot Golf Grips” are also available, with $2 from each one sold going to the Folds of Honor Foundation.
• Flag Day Tournament: PGA Golf Club – Sun., Sept. 5 All Day Celebrate Patriot Golf Day Weekend by playing in the PGA Golf Club’s 18-hole, tee times Flag Day event. Each participant that donates $5 to the Folds of Honor Foundation will receive a small American flag. When the player reaches the point on the golf course when their score reflects par plus their handicap, they will plant their flag. If a player finishes the round and still has not exceeded this score, they will continue playing until they reach that total. The competitor whose flag is planted the furthest on the course wins. Prizes are awarded to the top finishers.
• Labor Day Golf: PGA Golf Club and PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance –
Mon., Sept 6 All Day Donations accepted for the Folds of Honor Foundation through a Stableford scoring golf event, golf lessons and admission. A contribution of $5 per person is requested along with entrance fees.

Tulsa, Okla. (August 19, 2010) – The Folds of Honor Foundation today announced it has named George W. Bush, 43rd President of the United States of America, as the Honorary Chairman of Patriot Golf Day Weekend 2010.

Patriot Golf Day events, held at PGA Village in Port St Lucie and thousands of participating golf courses over Labor Day weekend, raise money for scholarships for the families of military members killed or disabled in service to their country. Since its creation in 2007, Patriot Golf Day and its events, supported by The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association (USGA), have raised more than $5.3 million, and the Folds of Honor has awarded 1,163 scholarships and counting.

“I am pleased to be associated with the Folds of Honor Foundation, and I encourage all golfers to get out and support this worthy cause,” said President Bush. “Education is the key to a future of hope and opportunity. When our heroes in uniform are killed or wounded in the line of duty, the citizens they protect and defend ought to help the families those heroes leave behind. Patriot Golf Day is a perfect way for people to have fun and support our military families at the same time.”

“President Bush led our country through the September 11 attacks and outlined a strategy that has kept our nation safe for nearly a decade,” said Major Dan Rooney, F-16 fighter pilot and founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation. “We were proud to honor his father, George H.W. Bush, with the Patriot Cup Award earlier this year. We are equally proud and honored to have his support to help our military families realize their educational dreams.”

On Patriot Golf Day weekend, golfers have the opportunity to make donations to Folds of Honor for its scholarship program. Many courses all around the country ask golfers to add an additional $1 or more to their regular greens fees over Labor Day Weekend, while others host special events. The first Patriot Golf Day, organized in just a few short weeks, raised more than $1 million; last year’s Patriot Golf Day raised more than $2.3 million. Some 1,163 scholarships have been awarded by the Folds of Honor Foundation over the past three years.

Rooney also added that President Bush has been a lifelong supporter of the USGA and has had a lifelong passion for the game of golf.

Folds of Honor Foundation was founded in May 2007 by Major Dan Rooney, an F-16 Fighter Pilot, PGA Professional, and USGA member. A decorated military pilot in the Oklahoma Air National Guard, Major Rooney has served three combat tours in Iraq. It was after his second tour, while a passenger on a commercial flight, that Major Rooney witnessed an event that would profoundly change his life. As the plane landed, the pilot announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, we have an American hero on board – Corporal Brock Bucklin. As a sign of respect, please remain seated while Corporal Bucklin’s family receives him in his final homecoming.” Major Rooney watched through the window of the plane as the flag-draped casket was lowered. He saw a family waiting for Brock, and a little four-year old boy waiting for his father. This tragic homecoming inspired Major Rooney to create the Folds of Honor Foundation.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – The 92nd PGA Championship will be showcased at the PGA Historical Center in Port St. Lucie, Fla., via a new exhibit of iconic photography that debuts Thursday, July 29. The featured display will trace the storied history of the PGA Championship – “The Season’s Final Major…Glory’s Last Shot” beginning with the inaugural event at Siwanoy Golf Club in Bronxville, N.Y., and won by “Long” Jim Barnes in 1916.

The PGA Championship was first staged at the suggestion of department store magnate Rodman Wanamaker, who provided the legendary trophy that bears his name. Many of golf’s most legendary names have captured the event and are featured in historic photos on the display, including Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Defending Champion
Y.E. Yang, Barnes, Jock Hutchison and Vijay Singh, who won the last PGA Championship held at Whistling Straits, in Kohler, Wis. – the site of this year’s event.

The display also recounts the tale of the stunning 2009 PGA Championship, won by Yang, the first Asian-born male to capture a major Championship in golf. Yang shocked the world, as he held off Woods on the final day in dramatic fashion and carried off the Wanamaker Trophy to glory at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. “The PGA Historical Center golf museum is proud to provide our visitors new, dynamic exhibits that elegantly capture the passion of golf and the nearly 95-year history of The PGA of America,” said PGA President Jim Remy.

Recent special exhibits at the PGA Historical Center have included tributes to the Senior PGA Championship, PGA Grand Slam of Golf, African-American Pioneers, PGA Honorary Members and Arnold Palmer. Upcoming displays scheduled for this year will also pay homage to Patriot Golf Day, the Ryder Cup, PGA Professional National Championship and PGA Cup. Additional attractions include the Ryder Cup Trophy, the four major Championship trophies of golf, the oldest known written mention of golf from the Articles of Parliament in the 1500s, Hagen’s original birth certificate, and the actual workbench used by legendary course architect Donald Ross.

The featured display will trace the storied history of the Senior PGA Championship, the oldest major Championship in senior golf, which was first contested at Augusta (Ga.) National Golf Club, and won by Jock Hutchison in 1937. The event was staged at the request of legendary amateur Bobby Jones just three years after the inaugural Masters Tournament. Over the years, many of golf’s greatest names have captured the Senior PGA Championship, including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Gary Player, Sam Snead, Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd and Hale Irwin.

The exhibit will also tell the tale of 2009 Senior PGA Champion Michael Allen, who erased a 334-event winless streak for a two-shot victory over Larry Mize to capture the most prestigious event in senior golf at Canterbury Golf Club near Cleveland. Items showcased from Allen’s victory include his shirt, visor, sand wedge and official scorecard.

The 2010 Senior PGA Championship will be held at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo., May 25-30.
